Get to Know…

Francile Albright

The Picture House Regional Film Center
Pelham

When The Picture House's deputy director and director of education, Francile Albright, conceived of a class for families during the early days of the pandemic, she had no idea it would blossom into a vibrant and active film-studies program for adults.

"I came up with something called an Arts Break, where we feature short films, have activity sessions, and discussions," explains Albright, "and we started finding that a lot of adults were watching them; people who were stuck at home or empty nesters were watching these films and e-mailing us with their thoughts. This is when we started our online film-studies class for adults. There is an interest and a need. We started that during COVID and have continued it, and we have been able to discuss topics people don't usually talk about, without arguing or divisiveness."

Since then, The Picture House's Arts Breaks have included discussions of August Wilson's films, colorblind casting, Asian Americans in film, and stereotypes in marketing. "We even did a course on Native American cinema with two people from the Sundance Institute who lead indigenous programs," adds Albright.

"I think that our online film class has become a space where we are truly using films as a conduit for conversations that can sometimes be hard, but in that environment, they really aren't, and they end up being proactive and positive," says Albright. "We get everyone from film lovers who want to see something they never would have watched to the folks who like the cultural perspectives and lessons."

Get to Know…

Jo Jayson

The Center for Continuing Education
Mamaroneck

Jo Jayson isn't your everyday educator — or artist. "I've never thought of myself as part of the mainstream art world. My work is about the feminine; I call it the 'sacred feminine,'" explains Jayson. "There is currently a movement of the feminine rising. When I started these paintings back in 2007, I was a little bit ahead of the times. So, by the time these paintings became more known, I kind of hit this movement, and it was great timing."

Jayson currently teaches private classes for kids and adults at her home, as well as courses at Mamaroneck's Center for Continuing Education. Previously, she worked and lived in the UK, specifically Manchester and London, as well as in Sydney. "I love to teach there," says Jayson of the Center for Continuing Education. "I think it's assumed that it is just retired people that take these classes, but that's not true. Whether people are working from home or are stay-at-home moms, there is just this whole cross-section of humanity."

According to Jayson, who lives on the border of Harrison and Mamaroneck, much of this success lies in her approach to pedagogy. "I am self-taught, and I teach intuitively — the way that I think makes sense to the average person who has never drawn before," she says. "I do think I teach in a very different way than other teachers. I teach people to see. That is really what I do. We can use different mediums, but at the end of the day, that is what drawing is: It is about seeing correctly."
